The Electoral Commission of Uganda is an independent constitutional body responsible for organizing, conducting, and supervising elections and referenda in a free and fair manner. The electoral process begins with the registration of eligible voters, ensuring that every Ugandan citizen aged 18 and above has the opportunity to participate in democratic governance.

Here are some essential facts about Uganda’s electoral process:

Voter Registration

Every eligible Ugandan citizen aged 18 and above has the right to register as a voter. Registration is done during officially designated periods and includes biometric data capture.

Voter’s Register

The national voter’s register is compiled, displayed for public inspection, and updated to ensure accuracy before any election.

Nomination of Candidates

Political parties and individuals intending to contest in elections must be duly nominated by the Electoral Commission, following specific legal guidelines and timelines.

Campaign Period

Candidates are allowed to campaign within the official campaign period. Campaigns must be conducted peacefully and in accordance with the electoral laws and guidelines.

Polling and Voting

Polling takes place at designated polling stations where voters cast their ballots in secret. Electoral materials, including ballot papers and boxes, are secured and distributed under strict supervision.

Vote Counting and Results Declaration

Votes are counted at polling stations immediately after voting ends, and results are declared transparently. Final results are officially announced by the Electoral Commission.

Electoral Dispute Resolution

The law provides mechanisms for handling electoral complaints and disputes through legal and administrative channels to ensure fairness and accountability.
